The Brief — US politics, business and the world, in smart brevity.

Why we exist: your time is the scarcest thing you own. Most news makes you pay for one fact with ten paragraphs. The Brief inverts the trade: what happened, why it matters, what's next — in as few words as the truth allows.

The big picture: brevity is not the opposite of depth; it is the proof of it. Every item is written to be finished, and every extra sentence has to earn its place.

The newsroom

Each channel is signed by the reporter responsible for its judgment, under the direction of the Editor-in-Chief.

The bylines of The Brief are editorial personas — author identities created and maintained by the newsroom. Facts in every story are verified independently of the byline.

Method

Every item is checked against its sources through an automated editorial review before it publishes. Analysis is labeled as such; The Brief publishes no opinion section. Images accompany the reporting for illustration and are credited to their source where applicable. Spot an error? Write to the address in the footer: verified errors are corrected, and substantive corrections are noted in the item itself.
