Driving the news: Democratic socialist Donavan McKinney defeated two-term Rep. Shri Thanedar in Michigan's 13th Congressional District, backed by Sen. Bernie Sanders, Rep. Rashida Tlaib, and Justice Democrats, which spent nearly $1 million on the race, according to Politico.

The big picture: It wasn't just one race. Leftist favorite Abdul El-Sayed defeated establishment-backed Rep. Haley Stevens in Michigan's Senate primary — despite endorsements from Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. Sunrise Movement co-founder William Lawrence also won the Democratic nomination in the battleground 7th Congressional District.

By the numbers: Justice Democrats has now unseated multiple incumbent House Democrats in New York, Colorado, and Michigan in recent cycles.

McKinney's platform includes Medicare for All, abolishing ICE, restricting military aid to Israel, and expanding federal housing and clean energy spending.

What Thanedar said: 'The socialist movement that has defeated many sitting members in New York and elsewhere has come to Michigan, and we came out short.'

Between the lines: Thanedar's break with Democratic Socialists of America over Israel and his repeated impeachment efforts against President Trump made him a target from both flanks — and neither saved him.

The bottom line: The Democratic Party's activist base is systematically replacing pragmatic incumbents with hard-left candidates. For Republicans, El-Sayed and Lawrence now head into competitive general elections — potential referendums on how far left the party has drifted.
