Driving the news: President Trump and Russian President Putin spoke for roughly an hour Tuesday. The call came after special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner visited both capitals.

Top Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said the two leaders 'exchanged views' on the envoys' findings. He added that Trump signaled 'far-reaching prospects for a full restoration of US-Russian relations' if Moscow agreed to a peace deal.

The White House did not respond to a request for comment.

Between the lines: Kushner called the proposals 'new.' The Financial Times reported they were updated versions of earlier US plans. That gap matters.

By the numbers: Kyiv said it struck four targets inside Russia on Saturday night. Its air defenses shot down 82 drones and six missiles the same night.

Reality check: Ukrainian President Zelensky said he expects the war to continue into winter. Putin, ahead of parliamentary elections, raised the possibility of wider mobilization and cast the conflict 'as part of a much broader confrontation,' per Le Monde.

Putin also told Trump that Russia has 'no aggressive plans against Europe.' CIA Director Ratcliffe had visited Moscow last week to deliver that warning directly.

The status of Donbas remains the central sticking point. Both sides claim the industrial region.

The bottom line: Trump's peace push is real. The diplomatic machinery is moving. But the facts on the ground — and the words from both Kyiv and Moscow — tell a harder story. A cease-fire is not imminent. The administration's leverage depends on whether the promise of restored US-Russia relations is enough to move Putin. So far, it isn't.
