Trump Touts Jobs, Manufacturing Rebound

Manufacturing is improving and August added 162,000 jobs across the economy, a boost Republicans hope to ride into the midterms. Trump's allies say the gains show his trade and immigration agenda is working.

American manufacturing is on the rebound, and that is good timing for President Donald Trump with the midterms just two months away.

Businesses across the board added 162,000 new jobs in August. The workforce participation rate also rose. The source says that matters because people who drop out of the labor force do not show up in unemployment rates.

The biggest gains were in manufacturing. Peter Navarro said manufacturing employment rose by 16,000 in August, with nearly all of that gain coming from durable-goods manufacturing, which added 15,000 jobs. He also said manufacturing employment is up 58,000 this year, driven by a 94,000-job gain in durable goods.

The piece frames that rebound as a political and economic win for Trump. It says the results fit his immigration crackdown and his trade agenda, and it argues that uncertainty from court fights can slow business decisions on taxation, regulation and reshoring.

It also says America had shed 199,000 manufacturing jobs in the 16 months before January 2025, according to industry analyst Alan Tonelson. On that view, Trump is not starting from zero. He is trying to pull the sector out of a hole left behind.

Why it matters: manufacturing jobs are the kind voters can feel. They support paychecks, local suppliers and private-sector investment. If the rebound holds, it strengthens the case for policy that favors American production over offshoring.

The bottom line: jobs will be on the ballot in November, even if Trump is not. For a market economy, that means predictable rules, more domestic production and less dependence on cheap foreign labor.
