US Ends Record Lettuce Illness Outbreak

Federal health authorities say the largest recorded cyclosporiasis outbreak is over after contaminated iceberg lettuce sickened nearly 13,000 people across 21 states. The case has renewed scrutiny of food-safety controls, FDA staffing and traceability rules.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday the nation’s largest recorded cyclosporiasis outbreak is over.

CDC data show 12,883 cases linked to contaminated iceberg lettuce, along with 570 hospitalisations and two deaths. The outbreak hit 21 states, with Michigan the hardest-hit state and the site of both deaths.

Health officials linked the illness to shredded iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms in Mexico. Taylor Farms recalled the lettuce in July, and Taco Bell also pulled the product from its restaurants that month.

The CDC said it is confident all recalled lettuce tied to the outbreak has been removed from the market. At its peak, more than 1,000 infections were reported in a single day. By August, reported infections had fallen to fewer than two per day on average.

The outbreak fueled the worst cyclosporiasis season on record in the U.S., with 19,595 overall cases since May 1. That is more than 16 times the number recorded in the same period last year.

Why it matters: the outbreak exposed how fragile the food supply chain can be when traceability fails. The FDA did not inspect the Mexican farm implicated in the outbreak until about a month after the investigation began, while inspections of foreign food facilities have fallen far short of the agency’s annual target.

The bottom line: consumers pay the price when bureaucracy moves slower than contaminated produce. Faster inspections, stronger traceability and tighter oversight are not abstractions; they are basic protections for public health and market confidence.
